A logo helps people remember your brand and must always be designed in line with your brand strategy/ brand positioning. Get it wrong and you could lose a lot of business.
A logo type/icon combination in particular uses a font treatment in conjunction with an icon. For instance the logos of Pringles and Starbucks are such logo type/icon combinations. Where in contrast, the FedEx logo for example is a logotype and Nike's swoosh is a logo icon.
